Similar to Mary seeking refuge in a manger during Jesus’ birth, a street dog in Palenque, Mexico found sanctuary among hay-filled barnacles to deliver her litter of seven pups. The town’s main plaza featured a charming Nativity scene complete with traditional figurines, but the addition of the pregnant stray dog was unexpected.
It seems that a cute little pooch found comfort in the Christmas nativity scene and decided to make it her temporary home. The furry friend probably wanted to take a break from the chilly weather, and as an added bonus, she could also provide some light for the nativity scene. A reporter named Eric Guzmán noticed the canine snuggled up in the straw and decided to investigate further. To his surprise, he discovered that the dog had given birth to seven adorable puppies! It appears that the Christmas nativity scene was the ideal location for the furry family, and the mama dog must have felt safe and cozy there.
Eric expressed both surprise and relief upon discovering that his puppies were secure in a protected spot. He conveyed to The Dodo that they were never exposed to moisture or low temperatures. It’s worth noting that although the climate in Palenque is typically warm throughout the year, it gradually becomes chilly from December onwards, and it’s quite common to see dogs seeking refuge from the weather during this time.
Since Eric first shared the story of the dog and her puppies residing in the manger, several people from Palenque have visited to witness the adorable family firsthand. Some even brought along food and beverages as a gesture of kindness. Notably, local authorities have also taken notice and granted permission for the dogs to stay as long as necessary.
In addition to the religious significance, Dejando Huellitas SOS Palenque has also taken steps to ensure the well-being of the dogs and find them homes for the future. Eric does not consider the birth of the puppies in the Christmas manger a miracle, but he hopes it will raise awareness about the issue of stray dogs and encourage people to adopt them instead of buying from breeders. He stresses the importance of loving these animals regardless of where they come from.
